If you search “best antivirus,” you’ll find a million opinion lists. The more reliable way is to look at independent lab tests that try to measure how well security software blocks real threats and how much it slows your PC down.
This guide is based on results from three major testing groups:
- AV-TEST (scores protection + performance + usability)
- AV-Comparatives (real-world protection + performance + advanced threats, plus annual awards)
- SE Labs (home “anti-malware” protection tests and ratings)
What “best” means (simple)
A good security program should do 3 things:
- Stop malware (viruses, trojans, spyware)
- Stop ransomware (the stuff that locks your files)
- Not slow your PC down too much
Also: you only need one antivirus running at a time. Two at once can cause problems.
The top picks (based on lab results)
1) Best free choice for most people: Microsoft Defender
If you use Windows 10/11, you already have this built in. In the latest AV-TEST home user results (Dec 2025), Microsoft’s Defender scored 6/6 Protection, 6/6 Performance, 6/6 Usability.
Why it’s a great default
- Already integrated into Windows
- Updates automatically
- Strong test results without needing extra installs
Who should upgrade from Defender?
- You download lots of files/mods/tools
- You want extra layers like advanced ransomware controls, stronger phishing tools, or more detailed alerts
2) Best paid “all-around” protection: Bitdefender
Bitdefender Total Security scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST (Dec 2025).
It also appears as a Top-Rated product in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer summary.
Why people pay for it
- Strong protection track record in multiple labs
- Usually good “set it and forget it” protection for home PCs
3) Best paid suite if you want lots of extra tools: Norton
Norton scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST (Dec 2025).
It also earned a Top-Rated Product Award in AV-Comparatives’ 2025 summary.
Why people choose it
- Strong protection + lots of “extras” bundled together (varies by plan)
- Often ranked highly for real-world protection in consumer testing summaries
4) Best if you want “strong but lighter”: ESET
ESET scored 6/5.5/6 in AV-TEST (Dec 2025) for its consumer product shown on the AV-TEST results list.
ESET is also listed as Top-Rated by AV-Comparatives for 2025.
Why it’s popular
- Strong protection and usually feels less “heavy” than big suites
- Good choice if you care about performance and control
5) Best “performance/low impact” winners (AV-Comparatives): Avast / AVG
In AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer summary, Avast and AVG won Gold in the Performance Test (low system impact).
AV-TEST’s Dec 2025 results show Avast Free Antivirus scored 6/6/6.
Who this is good for
- You want strong protection without slowing down the PC much (based on those performance awards)
A big warning for U.S. users: Kaspersky
If you’re in the United States, the U.S. Department of Commerce (via the Bureau of Industry and Security) issued a determination prohibiting Kaspersky and its affiliates from providing certain cybersecurity/antivirus products and services to U.S. persons.
So—even if it tests well—don’t choose Kaspersky in the U.S.
“Extensive research” takeaway: the labs mostly agree
Across AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, a handful of brands repeatedly show up as top performers or top-rated. In late-2025 testing snapshots, Defender, Bitdefender, Norton, ESET, and Avast/AVG all score strongly in major consumer test programs.
SE Labs’ home testing also shows multiple products achieving top ratings (AAA) in its Home Anti-Malware reports.
What I’d install on your PC (simple choices)
Pick one of these paths:
If you want the simplest setup (recommended for most)
- Keep Microsoft Defender
- Turn on Windows Security protections (SmartScreen, ransomware protection options, updates)
Because Defender is already scoring at the top tier in AV-TEST’s recent home results.
If you want the best paid upgrade
- Bitdefender (best all-around pick in the research stack above)
If you want a strong suite with lots of extras
- Norton
If you want strong protection and a “lighter” feel
- ESET
Quick install rules (so you don’t accidentally weaken security)
- Uninstall your old antivirus first (don’t stack two)
- Update Windows fully
- Install the new antivirus and let it update
- Run one full scan
- Turn on 2FA for your email + password manager (this stops most “password hacks” better than antivirus)
